History: Timeline of milestones.

The National Silkworm Seed Organization (NSSO) began its journey as the Central Bivoltine Project in 1975, later known as the National Silkworm Seed Project (1981), with the main objective of promoting bivoltine silk production through the production and supply of quality bivoltine basic and commercial seed. Subsequently, in 2004-05, it was rechristened NSSO to bridge the gap in seed demand versus availability through quality bivoltine seed production. The organization has completed more than four decades of meaningful existence, rendering yeoman service to the sericulturists of the country. It has been undertaking quality silkworm seed production and distribution with an emphasis on bivoltine silkworm seed with appropriate technical know-how, enabling farmers to reap rich harvests.

The National Silkworm Seed Organization (NSSO) originated as the Central Bivoltine Project in 1975 and later evolved into the National Silkworm Seed Project in 1981. Its primary goal is to promote bivoltine silk production by producing and supplying high-quality bivoltine basic and commercial seeds. In 2004-05, it was renamed NSSO to address the gap between seed demand and availability by focusing on quality bivoltine seed production. Over the past four decades, NSSO has provided valuable support to sericulturists in the country by producing and distributing quality silkworm seeds, particularly bivoltine seeds, along with technical expertise to help farmers achieve successful harvests.

Mission statement:

It has a mandate to maintain, multiply and supply authorized silkworm stocks, production and supply of quality industrial silkworm seeds and transfer of technologies in the field to improve the productivity and quality of silk.

Mandate of NSSO:

  • Maintain, multiply and supply reproductive seed true to the breeds’ traits/ characteristics
  • Produce commercial silkworm seed meeting the prescribed quality standards
  • Introduce new systems/technology in silkworm seed production and provide quality leadership
  • Guide and bring-in excellence in silkworm seed production by imparting training
  • Implement Central Silk Board (Amendment) Act 2006

Objectives of NSSO:

  • To introduce and popularize quality silkworm hybrids for commercial exploitation
  • To produce and supply productive hybrid disease free layings (dfls) for commercial exploitation
  • To train manpower in P1 seed cocoon generation, large scale bivoltine loose egg production technology
  • To take up crop inspection and offer timely guidance that can aid in increased production and productivity
  • To co-ordinate seed supply and extension related programs with state departments / research institutes
  • Assisting and coordinating silkworm disease monitoring through survey and surveillance
  • Promoting distribution of bivoltine hybrid disease free layings
  • Supporting Research Institutes in production and supply of disease free layings of new races / breeds for field trials.
